the silences that occur along the way

December 31, 2013 § 2 Comments

Last one, I think, for the year. This is from something not particularly old, so perhaps it didn’t have the proper period to simmer. But right now, hot off the stove, I like it.

* * *

Clumsiness, awkwardness, trains of thought skipped the tracks,
their cargo become litter,

compliments regrettably given,
praises accepted like a grievance;

such are the moments between people,
the silences that occur along the way

to what,
exactly?

frustrating the noblest intention and effort,
with the same extravagant ease as the smallest;

such as when you excitedly read aloud the most ‘beautiful thing ever’,
and all that is heard is her cold inattention,

and you’re loathe to continue, but you do;
and somewhere within the persistence something happens,

though perhaps to neither of you, for you may still stew and she remain bored,
nothing need change at all,

when but one, maybe neither of you two,
maybe a third, someone sitting nearby,

is pleased to have bore witness.
